Canadian and European Union (EU) trade representatives had discussions in January2010 in Brussels and concluded their second round of the Canada - EU Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) negotiations.
Trade talks between Canada and the 27-nation trade block starting October 2009.
A joint economic study recently showed that the Canada-EU CETA could increase bilateral trade by as much as 38 billion Canadian dollars (26 billion Euros, 37 billion U.S. dollars).
Economists and trade analysts have gone on record stating that the Canada-EU CETA could benefit Canada's aerospace, chemicals, aluminum, wood products, fish and seafood, automotive vehicles and parts, agricultural products, transportation, engineering, and computer service sectors.
Canadian critics of the Canada-EU CETA contend that the scope of the agreement threatens public services (as it will grant EU companies access to government procurement opportunities at the provincial level), environmental sustainability, social policy, and local democracy.
The Harper Government has gone on record stating that the Canada - EU CETA is a national priority for Canada.
